Summary
Mr. Arpino discusses his latest work for the City Center Joffrey Ballet, called The poppet, and based on Arthur Miller's play The crucible; dancer Christian Holder; the new ballet's utilization of film clips, narrative, and theater elements; Patricia Zipprodt's costumes; Hans Werner Henze's score; the generation gap of 1692 contrasted with that of the 1960's; the ritualistic quality of dance; adapting Miller's play for his ballet; rebellion in dance and society ultimately leading to creativity and conformity; the Joffrey repertory; being resident choreographer; the growth of the company; various choreographers working with the Joffrey company; one-man companies of modern dance as compared to one-man ballet companies; his love for the theatrical side of dance; the strength of male dancing in the Joffrey company; the nude scene in The poppet; and musical excerpts from Henze's score.
