Summary
Documentary on the twist and its place in the history of rock and roll music and dancing, as recalled by dancers, choreographers, and songwriters active in its heyday. Hank Ballard talks about writing the song that started the dance craze; Chubby Checker recalls the introduction of the dance. Former dancers discuss the influence of Dick Clark and his American Bandstand television program on teenagers' dances in general. Excerpts from news reports, television shows, and films illustrate the precursors of the twist in the 1950s, its rise in the 1960s and the spread of its popularity among adults as well as teenagers, its use as a marketing tool and pervasive presence in the media, and the protests against it. Also discussed are the revolutionary changes the twist made in social dancing, the search for a new dance that would rival its success, and the development of freestyle discothèque dancing in the 1970s.
