Biography
William Edouard Scott was a painter, illustrator and muralist. He studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago (1904-1906), and, while residing between the United States and France from 1910 to 1918, studied at the Julian and Colarossi Academies in Paris, as well as under the African-American artist Henry O. Tanner. He established his reputation as a painter and muralist during the 1910s and 1920s, was awarded the Julius Rosenwald Fellowship to travel to Haiti to paint (1931-1933), and would create murals for over 200 public buildings, mostly in the United States, throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In the late-1950s, loss of eyesight made it difficult to paint during his final years.
