Summary
Documentary and travelogue focusing on Russian performing and visual arts during the New Year's holidays, filmed in Moscow, Leningrad, and other locations in Russia. Among the performers are the Armenian State Folk Ensemble, the Moscow Circus, the Don Cossacks, and several unidentified folk dance and music groups. Gypsy dancers and singers are recorded at a restaurant. Also depicted are a ballet class for young girls; a scene from an unidentified ballet accompanied on the soundtrack by music from Swan lake; and the Bolshoi Ballet in excerpts from Swan lake, intercut with views of Russian religious art and footage of real swans. The program also includes an aria by a female singer in a church; music from the opera War and peace, performed over archival footage of Leo Tolstoy; views of athletes preparing for the 1980 Olympics at Lenin Stadium; an interview with a Russian actor-director; and scenes of the Hermitage.
