Description
1 videocassette (23 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
Documentary on dancer Frankie Manning, who talks about the lindy hop, past and present. He recalls Herbert White, who organized the group Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in the 1930s; the musical Swingin' the dream, in which he danced a "jitterbug scene"; his dance partner Frieda Washington; performances at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem; singer Billie Holiday; and other personalities and events, illustrated by still photographs. Interspersed with his reminiscences are scenes of a lindy hop workshop he presented in Seattle in 1995; performances by a Swedish group, the Rhythm Hot Shots, as well as dancers Erin Stevens, Steven Mitchell, Julie Oram, and Ryan François; and moments from his 80th birthday celebration in May 1994, during which he danced the lindy hop with a succession of partners. Erin Stevens and others provide brief commentaries.
