  • "Rare editions of the great Italian writers notably Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarch, and Ariosto. Important books and tracts relating to America. Early and rare chronicles in Spanish, Portuguese, English and French. Important English county histories. A very extensive collection of tracts relating to the political and religious events in England and France in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many very uncommon poetical tracts in French, Italian and Spanish. Collections of councils, lives of saints, books on canon and civil law. First editions of the writings of the chief French, Italian and Spanish poets of the 16th and 17th centuries, etc. etc."
  • Library collected by Charles Spencer, third Earl Sunderland; augmented by successive owners until its dispersion. First portion sold December 1-3, 5-10, 12, 1881; 2nd, April 17-22, 24-27, 1882; 3rd, July 17-22, 24-27, 1882; 4th, November 6-11, 13-16, 1882; 5th, March 10, 12-17, 19-22, 1883.
  • A sixth portion, continuing the paging of the first five and often found bound at end, contains "The following books & manuscripts (overlooked during the compilation of the Catalogue ... " (pages 1039-1042) and "Catalogue of rare & valuable books returned imperfect from the sale of the Sunderland Library" (pages 1043-1058); both sales June 1, 1883.
  • Without the "overlooked" and returned lots, the sale comprised 13,858 lots and yielded £56,581.
  • Some copies accompanied by "List of prices and purchasers' names" for each portion (cxlv pages ; 30 cm).
