Biography
Playwright, director and musician, Hemphill was born in Texas. A. Marcus Hemphill majored in music at Houston-Tillotson College, Austin, TX. Since 1973 he has been a member of Frank Silvera Writers Workshop in New York City, where he moderated and conducted readings. He was also a member of New York Shakespeare Festival Workshops, and a member of the jazz duo, "The Pair Extraordinaire" which created five albums for Liberty Records. In 1985 he became one of the writers for "The Cosby show." Hemphill was the artistic director of the Riverside Drama and Cultural Club at Riverside Church, in New York City, where he directed a number of productions. His play "Inacent Black" was the recipient of six AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) Awards, for best playwright, best lighting, best set, best costume design, best director, and best production of the year, 1984.
