- Biography
Playwright, actress, singer, director and producer. Hazel J. Bryant was the founder and artistic director of the Afro-American Total Theatre, New York (1968-73), which was followed by the Richard Allen Center for Culture and Arts, of which she was also the founder-director. She was one of the first organizers and the first president of the Black Theatre Alliance, 1969-1973. In the 1960s she went to Europe, where she sang operatic roles in most of the major opera houses in Italy, France, Austria, Germany, and the former Soviet Union. Bryant is the recipient of the Harold Jackman Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to the arts in New York, 1970; a special citation from the governor of New York for having produced the 1970 Black Theatre Festival at Lincoln Center.
In 1971, Bryant was the biographical subject of a 30-minute documentary film, produced by Gregory Peterson, entitled "Hazel 5X". She died of heart disease in her home in New York City after having spoken earlier the same day at th United Nations.
