Biography
Poet, playwright, fiction writer, teacher, artist, political journalist and activist in black feminist causes. De Veaux, born in New York City, received the B.A. from Empire State College of SUNY, 1976. She was creative writing instructor for the Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center, New York City, 1971; reading and creative writing instructor for Project Create, New York City, 1973; and cultural coordinator of Black Expo for the Black Coalition of Greater New Haven, CT, 1975. She is the co-founder of Coeur de l'Unicorn Gallery, New Haven, 1975, where she exhibited her own paintings.
Since 1976 she has been working as a freelance writer. Her poetry and drama have been performed in and around New York in such places as Greenhaven Prison, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Catherdral of St. John the Divine, Riverside Church, and F. Douglass Creative Arts Center's Experimental Theater. Her work has been broadcast on several radio stations and TV channels. She is the recipient of first prize in Black Creation's national fiction contest, 1972; best production award, Westchester Community College Drama Festival, 1973; and two Art Books for Children awards from Brooklyn Museum in 1974 and 1975.
