Biography
Playwright, poet, black theater organizer, director, and performer, Mars Hill was born in Pine Bluff, AR. Hill was educated at the University of Illinois (B.S. in architectural engineering, 1954); the University of Washington (business law, 1971-1972); Russell Sage College, Troy, NY (history of theater, 1971-1972); SUNY/Albany (M.A. in Afro-American studies with a minor in theater, 1974). Mars Hill organized a black theater course at SUNY/Albany, 1970. He is the founder of Black Experience Ensemble, 1968, a theater group which has produced most of his plays. He has conducted a series of drama workshops and community Black Arts festivals in Albany, and performed and directed a number of plays in Seattle, Albany, and New York City. He is the author of the novel "The moaners bench," 1998.
