Summary
  • The Alberta Hunter Interviews and Performances Collection consists of interviews with Hunter from 1984 and with numerous friends and associates from 1984-1985. Over 12 hours of interviews of Hunter by biographer Frank C. Taylor are included along with his interviews of Rosetta Lenore, Jimmy the Greek, Mildred Crisp Little, Chris Albertson, Sam Sharp, Dorothy Clark, Lenny "Baby Doo" Caston, Dorothy "Dossie" Young, Irene Miller, Dick Campbell, Barney Josephson, Slow Kid Thompson, Dorothy Dowling, Florence Thornley, Mae Gaddy, Bobby Short, Johnny Hudgins, Margot Webb, Bill Moore, Mae Barnes, Barbara Bordnick, Joe A. Tiles, Hatcher Story, Elsworth Wright, Lillian Alpert, Bubba Gaines, Alan Macmillan, Flo Brown Robinson, Mabel Hampton, Mollie Moon, Robert Altman, John Hammond, Bill Krasilovsky, Marian Cooper, Rosa Henderson, and Barney Josephson.
  • The collection also consists of recordings of television appearances and radio broadcasts of Alberta Hunter. Television appearances include the Mike Douglas Show (1977), where she was interviewed by host Mike Douglas; the Today Show (1985); a Final Net Hair Spray commercial (1978); Eubie Blake's 100th birthday celebration (1983); plus a gala postmortum tribute to Hunter. Radio broadcasts include: Hunter on WHTG with Ray Knight, host; and at The Cookery (New Year's Eve) on National Public Radio (1977). Included is a segment featuring Marian Anderson receiving an award at City Hall, New York City, in 1984.

Alberta Hunter was a legendary blues singer, jazz vocalist, composer,and recording artist. Active from 1914, she took a 20-year (1955-1975) retirement from singing to become a practical nurse. She returned to the music and entertainment world in her later years and continued performing until her death in 1984. She performed in clubs and cabarets, toured internationally including several United Service Organizations (USO) Camp Show tours and recorded and composed music.
