Biography
Playwright, director, critic, editor, and teacher. Paul Carter Harrison was born in 1936, in New York City. He received a B.A. in liberal arts from Indiana University (1957) and an M.A. in psychology from the New School for Social Research (1962). He took graduate courses at Ohio University, where he was also associated with the Playwrights Unit of the Actors Studio. Harrison traveled extensively, and speaks several languages. From 1962 to 1968, he lived and worked in Amsterdam, where he authored, published and produced plays, wrote essays on the contemporary theater, and was dramaturgical consultant for the Mickery Theater, Loenesloat, the Netherlands. He also wrote and produced films for television. For a time Harrison was a freelance journalist writing on art and politics.
His educational career includes several years of teaching in numerous colleges and universities, among others: University of Massachusetts/Amherst, University of Illinois, Howard University, and Wesleyan University. Harrison's published books include, among others: "The modern drama footnote" (1965), "Dialogue from the opposition" (1965), "The drama of Nommo" (1972), "Kuntu drama" (1974), "Ameri/cain gothic" (1985),and "Totem voices" (1989). Harrison is a recipient of the Obie Award for "The great MacDaddy," 1974; the AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) Award for Best Musical Creator for "Tabernacle," 1981; and Illinois Arts Council Grant for playwriting, 1984.
