- Biography
- Playwright, screenwriter, poet and novelist. Michael (Gerald) Hastings was born in 1938, in London, England; he attended schools in south London; studied tailoring. Hastings began his career in drama at the Royal Court Theatre in London, England, where he was trained as an actor and writer. His first play, "Don't destroy me," was produced in 1956. Since then, he has written seventeen additional stage plays, including "Gloo Joo," "For the West (Uganda)," "A dream of people," and "Unfinished business." He has also written numerous scripts for television and film, poems, two biographies, and several books of fiction.Hastings is best known for his plays and television scripts; his six-part television series "The search for the Nile" won both an Emmy Award and Writers Guild Award, both in 1972, His other awards include: Arts Council award, 1956; award from the Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1965; Somerset Maugham Award, Society of Authors, 1972; Comedy of the Year Award, 1978. Michael Hastings contributed plays to the Negro Ensemble Company.
