Summary
Documentary on ecstatic dance in Turkey and its relationship to Islamic religious practice. Filmed on location, the opening of the program sets the scene by depicting different aspects of Turkish life in Istanbul and the region of Anatolia, including its tradition of village folk dancing. The program then explores the heritage of the 13th-century poet and mystic Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi, who established the Mehlevi order of dervishes. The dervishes are seen in action, accompanied by a discussion of the symbolism and goals of their dancing, and the ritual stipulations that govern their movements. In a second sequence, a group of men are seen in a sacred ceremony never before filmed. Chanting, group movement, drumming, and poetry contribute to their attainment of an ecstatic state that permits self-infliction of pain without permanent effects.
