Playwright and teacher, P. J. Gibson (Patricia Joann) was born in Pittsburgh, PA. Gibson won two AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) Awards, one for playwright of the year, and the other for production of the year, both for her play "Long time since yesterday," (1958), which also won awards for direction, costuming, and scenic design. She graduated from Keuka College, New York (B.A., 1973), and Brandeis University, (M.F.A., 1975). From 1971 to 1973, Gibson was production stage manager of Voices, Inc., New York.
Gibson was the Administrator of the Summer Introductory Preparatory Program at Brandeis University (1974), Creative Arts Director at Roxbury Children's Theater, Dorchester, MA (1974-1975), Instructor of drama and creative writing at Boston College, (1975-1976), Assistant Theatrical Director for "Say brother" at WGBH, TV, Boston (1976-1977), and instructor of creative writing/playwriting at Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center, NY (1978-1983). From 1979 to 1980, she was playwright-in-residence in the Arts Program, Cultural Council Foundation/Black Theater Alliance, NY. Gibson was guest lecturer at numerous colleges in the United States and overseas (Music and Drama Instructor in Khartoum, Sudan). In addition to the AUDELCO Awards mentioned above, she won a commission from the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities to write her historical drama "My mark, my name" (1977-1978).
