Video created for the presentation of the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award to Alvin Ailey at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, on June 7, 1987. Ailey is seen teaching in the studio, dancing in an early performance of his signature work Revelations, and in interview footage. His company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, is seen in various performance excerpts, and he and dancer Judith Jamison discuss Cry, a work that he created for her.
