Biography
Playwright, critic, author, editor, engineer and publisher. Okpaku was born in 1943 (some sources say 1935), in Lokoja, Nigeria, and came to the United States in 1962. He was graduated from Northwestern University, B.A., 1965; Stanford University, M.S., 1966, and further graduate study; University of Warsaw, research fellow, 1969. Okpaku is the publisher and president of The Third Press, the New York publishing house. He is also the editor of the highly regarded humanities review, Journal of the New African Literature and the Arts. Okpaku is a member of International P.E.N., African Studies Association (member of executive board, 1971), and National Writers Club. He is a recipient of the BBC drama award, 1967, for his play, "The virtues of adultery".
