Summary

Overview of dance in the Philippines, with emphasis on the ethnic and cultural diversity that has given rise to many contrasting dance forms. The survey begins with examples of dances from tribal societies, and a discussion of some prominent types of dances (e.g., work dances, hunt dances, dance-drama). The discussion then turns to the dances introduced by the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, including religious and secular dances. Francisca Reyes Aquino is recognized for her pioneering research into Philippine ethnic and folk dances, which were presented to the world in theatrical form by Bayanihan and other dance companies. The history of European classical ballet and modern dance in the Philippines is summarized, and their assimilation into Philippine culture is illustrated through performance footage of contemporary works that combine western dance techniques with Philippine themes and dance forms.
