Mr. Cage discusses the instrumentation, structure and performance of his compositions including those which accompany the following Merce Cunningham dance works: Duets, Exchange, Tango, Inlets, Fielding sixes, Roadrunners, and How to pass, kick, fall and run; the relationship of music and dance in Cunningham's work; the musician's role in Cage's work; the use of laughter in his composition, Renga with apartment house 1776; the use of voice in other works; meeting Igor Stravinsky; the importance of punctuality to musicians; the influence of Zen Buddhism on his composing; his use of the I Ching; his studies with Arnold Schoenberg; memorable theater going experiences; his influence on Merce Cunningham; Cunningham's use of ballet vocabulary; Cunningham's use of video as a choreographic tool; living with Cunningham; his philosophy of watching dance.
