- Summary
- Three noted Middle Eastern dancers look back upon their performing experiences in New York's ethnic nightclubs. Through many amusing anecdotes, they paint a vivid picture of the close-knit family atmosphere that prevailed among the dancers, musicians, and audiences, the last composed mainly of recent immigrants. They recall how they learned their craft, largely through observation, but also with the active assistance of other dancers and musicians. They describe the special qualities of Middle Eastern dance of the time: its stylistic variety, representing the traditions of many different countries in the region; its individualism and freedom of expression; and its emotional range, much of which was engendered by the music. The panel concludes with illustrations of movements, costumes, and memorable dancers, and a question-and-answer session.
