- Biography
Playwright and director. Samuel Lawrence Kelley's "Blue vein society" (based on Charles Chesnutt's short story, "The wife of his youth") was produced at the State University of New York at Cortland and at the Paul Robeson Company for the Performing Arts in Syracuse, New York. Kelly is a native of Marvell, Arkansas; he studied playwriting at the Yale School of Drama. He has an M.A. in Public Speaking from the University of Arkansas, 1971, and a Ph.D. in Radio-Television-Film ("The evolution of character portrayals in the films of Sidney Poitier") from the University of Michigan, 1980.
Kelly worked at the University of Michigan Television Center as a production assistant, film previewer, and photograph librarian. He is a professor of Speech and Theater at State University of New York College at Cortland. His honors and awards include the Benjamin Berenson Award (University of Michigan), and a scholarship from the Writer's Workshop (University of Rochester). His memberships include the Speech Communication Association, American Film Institute and the National Writer's Club.
