Summary
  • Designs by Adam van Vianen for ewers, beakers, bowls, candlesticks and other objects in silverwork with auricular-style ornamentation, reproduced from etchings by Theodorus van Kessel. Each plate is signed with monogram AV, except for the title pages, the dedication and the portrait of Adam van Vianen (no. 18), which is signed: Johan Smith pinxit, Theodor van Kessel fecit in aqua forti, Christaen van Vianen excudit. Print no. 45 is also signed: TVK fec. The text on the title pages and the dedication are within ornate auricular-style borders or cartouches. All other plates are without textual content.
  • Molen concludes from the wording of the dedication that some of the prints may have been based on drawings by Christiaen van Vianen. See Molen, deel 2, page 119.

Note
  • Contains a new introduction (preliminary pages 5-8) and facsimile reproductions of the 48 etchings (including 3 title pages, dedication and portrait of Adam van Vianen) that comprised the original edition, probably published between 1646 and 1652. See: Molen, J.R. ter. Van Vianen, 1984. Deel 2, Catalogus, no. 672-719; page 119.
  • Original title pages of parts 2 and 3 (plates 17 and 33) read: Modelli artificiosi dal famoso Sr. Adamo di Viana. Deuxjesme[-troisjesme] partie = Constighe modellen van den vermaerden E. Adam van Vianen. Tweede[-derde] deel / Theodora [sic] van Kessel fecit aqua forti.
  • Original edition was projected in 8 parts, but only 3 parts were published, containing 48 prints numbered 1-48.
  • Some copies of the original edition have word following "Chessel" on title page of part 1 correctly as "divisi."
This assertion is founded on the assumption, since proven erroneous, that there were two silversmiths named Adam van Vianen, father and son. See: Jonghe, C.H. de. • Two facsimile plates (no. 1 and no. 18) are signed: Gebrs. v.d. Braak Phot. Zinc.
See Fuhring, P. Ornament prints in the Rijksmuseum, 17th cent., 1522-1569.
