Summary
In the early days of the 20th century, different musical genres and styles mingled together. Ragtime, marches, minstrel songs, waltzes, medicine show tunes, pop, traditional airs, spirituals as well as a then new category, blues, were served up by itinerant black musicians. Many musicians, both professional and amateur, who learned their repertoire around the turn of the century, played different genres with equal facility at home for friends, local gatherings, or street crowds. Both Jesse Fuller and Elizabeth Cotten are examples of musicians whose styles were well-formed in the first decade of this century and reflect a range of influences beyond blues.
