- Biography
- Playwright. Carlyle Brown's play "The African Company presents 'Richard III' has appeared at Penumbra Theatre Company, Minneapolis; Arena Stage, Washington, DC; Venture Theater, Pittsburgh, PA; The Illinois Theatre Center; The New York Shakespeare Festival; Milwaukee Repertory Theater; and twice during a national tour with The Acting Company. The play is published by Dramatist Play Service and is included in the textbook anthology Playwrights of Color. Brown's "The little Tommy Parker celebrated colored minstrel show" premiered at Penumbra Theatre Company in St. Paul, and was produced off-Broadway with the Negro Ensemble Company where it was nominated for six AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) Awards and was published by Dramatist Play Service.Brown has received commissions from Arena Stage, The New York Shakespeare Festival and The Houston Grand Opera. He is a two-time winner of Penumbra Theatre Company's Cornerstone contest and a recipient of 1993 National Endowment for the Arts and McKnight Fellowships.
