- The Introduction, the extract from Bancroft's History of the United States relating to Franklin's appearance before the Privy Council, and the Earl of Chatham's speech of January 20, 1775, are here reprinted from a pamphlet published in Philadelphia, 1859, with title: Franklin before the Privy Council.
- The examination of Franklin, the report of which is here reprinted (p. 22-48) is not the one held before the Privy Council in 1774, but the examination before the House of Commons in 1766, relating to the repeal of the Stamp Act.
