- Summary
- A bitter drama about a light-skinned African-American orphan who doesn't want to accept her true racial identity. She is forced by her foster mother to attend an all-black school which she greatly resents. She is then sent to a convent for twelve years; after which she is cornered into marrying a dark-skinned man she abhors. After bearing a child of her own, she abandons her husband and decides to "pass" into the white world where she finds further unhappiness. Tragedy ensues.
