Note
  • The Ethiopic text is edited from two 18th-century manuscripts in the British Museum, Oriental 699 and Oriental 753.
  • The Ethiopic version derives from an Arabic translation of the Greek version of the material. The traditional attribution of the Greek version to Saint John of Damascus is disputed by many modern scholars; Robert Volk, editor of a 2006-2009 edition of the Greek version (Historia animae utilis de Barlaam et Ioasaph (Spuria). Berlin ; New York : Walter de Gruyter) believes it to be the work of Euthymius of Athos (see volume 1, pages 94-95).
  • Plates X-LXXIII in v. 2 reproduce the series of sixty-four woodcuts in the Middle High German version of Barlaam and Josaphat printed in Augsburg by Günther Zainer in approximately 1476.
