Summary
Surveying visual materials selected from the exhibition, Donald McKayle looks back upon high points in his life, major works that he choreographed, and some notable colleagues and collaborators. He discusses New Dance Group, where he began to dance and choreograph; the formation of his own group, Donald McKayle & Company; the Capezio Award that he received in 1963; the short-lived American Dance Theater that he formed with Jose Limon and Anna Sokolow; his creation of Sophisticated ladies, which won a Tony for best musical; and his inclusion in the book The modern dance: seven statements of belief, edited by Selma Jeanne Cohen. Among the choreographic works he discusses are Games, Rainbow 'round my shoulder, and District Storyville.
