Summary
Documentary on the Native American dance shawl, an integral part of the regalia of women participating in powwows and tribal dances. A brief introduction depicts the history of the shawl and its uses. Through the example of a young girl, Lindsay Stabler, who is making her first dance shawl, the video provides detailed instructions on procuring materials and tools, and constructing the shawl and its fringe. Nancy Cahwee demonstrates how to cut and sew the ribbonwork strips used as decoration, and Florian Griggs describes the correct way to wear, clean and store the shawl. In conclusion, Osage honor blankets and Southern Plains buckskin dresses are modeled and described.
