- Summary
- Profile of Agnes de Mille, told in her own words and illustrated with still photos and film clips. The program begins with a glimpse of de Mille at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in 1980. In interviews, she describes her parents ; her early life in Hollywood and observations of the early days of movie-making ; her uncle Cecil B. DeMille (illustrated by clips of his films) ; her early interest in dance, inspired by Anna Pavlova ; the discovery of her gift for pantomime ; her decision to become a professional dancer ; the success of her piece "Ballet class" ; the lessons of her six years in England ; choreographing Rodeo for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo ; the acclaim that greeted her choreography for Oklahoma! ; her subsequent choreography for musicals ; acquaintanceship with Hedda Hopper (including an excerpt from a discussion between Hopper, de Mille, Simone Signoret, Edward Murrow, telecast on the program Small world in 1959) ; the impact of her stroke in 1975.
