Summary
Documentary on activities of the American Indian Dance Theatre, narrated mainly by company members. In the first segment, they learn the dances of a Kwakiutl Indian community in the Northwest, whose members are seen participating in a potlatch. Kwakiutl dances in whale and raven masks, and a spirit possession dance are seen in rehearsal and stage performance. The company then visits the Penobscot Indians of New England, and performs a Penobscot dance. A suite of Seneca and Iroquois dances, including the stomp and smoke dances, is performed and explained. Scenes from powwows are accompanied by descriptions of the music and dances. Among the dances performed (some also seen in stage versions) are the men's grass, eagle, and fancy dances, the women's fancy shawl dance, and the honor dance. B&w archival footage depicts Native American dancers of the past.
