Overview of the history of ballet in China beginning with the influx of Russian teachers in the 1950s ; effects of the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, and the dominance of the propaganda ballet ; changes wrought by the Cultural Revolution of the 1970s, and the rising interest in the use of Chinese themes in ballet ; the Beijing Dance Academy ; economic and social conditions for Chinese dancers today ; the differences between dancers in mainland China and Hong Kong ; Wayne Eagling's full-length ballet The last emperor, created to celebrate Hong Kong's repatriation.
