- Summary
- Cassette 1 (6/6/98): Ms. Chuma discusses her family background, Japan in the post-war years, and her education. She describes the political atmosphere during the late 1960s and early '70s in Japan, her desire to travel outside Japan, and her decision to come to New York. She recalls her first experiences in New York, difficulties with the English language, and her life in New York in the late 1970s and early '80s. She discusses her connection to the visual arts world and impressions of performance and the city at that time. She describes her first performance efforts, forces that influenced her, her own creative intentions and concerns, and her interest in collaboration.
- Cassette 2 (6/6/98): Ms. Chuma discusses how she finds performers and the role of music and musicians in her work. She describes her interest in observing musicians perform, rehearse, and create, and their influence on her.
- Cassette 3 (6/30/98): Ms. Chuma discusses the economic issues of creating her work. She describes her work with film, working in Amsterdam, and other work of hers in the early 1980s. She discusses her collaboration with musician Christian Marclay, and shares her thoughts on teaching, economic issues and the process of establishing her company, Yoshiko Chuma and the School of Hard Knocks, in the mid 1980s. Chuma describes her working process, her experiences in relation to the premature birth of her son, on Harry Sheppard's illness and death from AIDS, performing at nightclubs.
- Cassette 4, (6/30/98): Chuma discusses her creative process, her interest in collaboration, and her piece, Unfinished symphony. She describes her 24-hour performance at P.S. 122 and the Living Room Project. She relates her experiences upon returning to Japan, her work with composer Tan Dun, the influence of Charles Ludlum on her work, her plans for the future, and feelings of uncertainty.
