- Circus Schumann was founded in 1870 and firmly established in Denmark by 1891. It was famous for its equestrian acts. In 1981, the Danish equestrienne Katja Schumann, daughter of master horseman Max Schumann and great-great-granddaughter of the circus' founder, joined the Big Apple Circus of New York City.
