Summary
Donald McKayle discusses his career, his beginnings with the New Dance Group, and the development of his style. He remembers his work with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham, his own dance companies, and his work with Alvin Ailey. He discusses African-American tradition in dance, jazz music and dance as roots for his piece District Storyville, and creating dance for the theater. He describes the qualities that make a strong jazz dancer, the importance of versatility and strong instruction for a dancer, training at the California Institute of the Arts, adapting choreography to different media, and his future work in theater.
