- William Korff, who first studied with Mary Anthony some 60 years ago at the New Dance Group studio, discusses her life and work, and his own contacts with her. He describes the experience of taking her class ; recalls working as a stage manager for her and Joseph Gifford in their joint concerts at the 92nd Street Y ; and gives his impressions of her performance as the mother in her signature piece, Threnody. He points out the pivotal role of Bill Bales in two important events in Anthony's life: first, inviting her to Bennington College, where she created Threnody ; secondly, in providing a link to Herbert Berghof, who invited her to teach movement for actors at the HB Studio. He discusses her pioneer work in presenting modern dance on television ; recalls her fight against eviction from her loft ; extols her as an extraordinary teacher ; briefly describes her early work The devil in Massachusetts, based on the Salem witch hunts ; and notes her memorable qualities as a dancer and an individual.
