- Cassette 1 (ca. 29 min.). Dancer-choreographer Joseph Gifford, who had a performing partnership with Mary Anthony in the 1940s, recalls first working with her in the cast of Stovepipe hat, choreographed by Tamiris, in 1943. He describes how their partnership began with his piece The pursued ; performing at the 92nd Street Y in New York ; Anthony's qualities as a dancer, particularly in her Lady Macbeth solo, one of her first pieces ; her inner resources, manifested in her work and her teaching, and later strengthened by meditation and Reiki ; her choreography (in which Gifford performed) for Look up and live, a religious series on television in the 1950s ; her qualities as a teacher, and their joint workshop at Tanglewood in the 1960s under the sponsorship of the Boston University-Tanglewood Institute ; her personal traits, including her even temperament, clarity, firmness, lack of egotism, and courage ; her performance as the mother in her signature work Threnody.
