Biography (note)
  • Amanullah Haiderzad, an Afghan sculptor, had established himself as a leading artist and teacher, and was Chairman of the Art Department in Kabul, Afghanistan. In 1970, he had earned his Masters degree in Art Education at New York University. After the U.S.S.R. invaded his country in December 1979, he began to fear for his life and decided to defect. Having first sent his wife and three children to India, he escaped via the Khyber Pass and, months later, reached New York City. In 1981, at age 42, he was working as a ticket taker at the Rialto Theater in New York City.
