Note
  • "The present work consists of the plates and accompanying text relating to the species discussed by Gould in the second edition of his Monograph of the Ramphastidae, 1852-54 ... but not included in the first edition, 1833-35 ... It seems to have been designed to add to the first edition to make it equivalent to the second edition, but as there are various alterations made in the species included in the first edition, of which changes no mention is made in the supplement, the equality is not maintained. The introduction, reprinted from the second edition, gives the classification as adopted in the complete work"--Catalogue of the Edward E. Ayer Ornithological Library.
  • Contains title page, introduction ([9]-26 pages at beginning), and 20 full-page hand-colored lithographs, signed: Gould & Richter, del. et lith., Hullmandel & Walton, imp.; each plate is accompanied by leaf of descriptive letterpress (some printed on both sides). All text and plates (except title page) are reprinted from the second edition (1854) of A monograph of the Ramphastidae, or family of toucans (first edition published in 3 parts, 1833-1835, with title page dated 1834). Plates and accompanying letterpress describe the 20 species that were partly or wholly new to the second edition; only Pteroglossus Azarae was included in the first edition (1834), but it is here represented as both Pteroglossus Azarae (in a redrawn image) and the newly distinguished Pteroglossus flavirostris.
