  • Originally issued in 36 parts, 1840-1848 (v. 1-7) and in 5 parts, 1851-1869 (Supplement).
  • Illustrations are full-page hand-colored lithographs, chiefly after sketches by John Gould, drawn and/or lithographed by Elizabeth Gould and H.C. Richter. "The coloring ... has been entirely executed by Mr. Bayfield ... The printing of the plates [is] by Messrs. Hullmandel and Walton"--Preface, v. 1, p. x. Some plates printed by C. Hullmandel; some in Supplement by Walter. 3 plates are double-page. Each plate accompanied by leaf with descriptive letterpress.
