Discusses the historical development of Chinju kŏmmu from the perspective of the gender of its performers, the functions the dance, and movement characteristics. The author proposes that although the dance as performed today by eight women retains clear suggestons of both male-female and masculine-feminine characteristics, and while features of these dichotomous categories have contributed to the development of the dance, ultimately gender is not what the dance is about.
