Biography
Founded in 1973, the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop (FSWW), named after the late actor/director Frank Silvera, was co-founded by playwright/director Garland Lee Thompson, actor Morgan Freeman, actress/director Billie Allen and journalist Clayton Riley. The Workshop was originally established as a developmental theater program for playwrights of African descent and other writers of color to have their works read, critiqued and produced. It later expanded its role to include directorial, technical and stage craft training.
The FSWW instituted various programs to achieve its goals including the Reading/Critique series in which new plays were read, rehearsed and critiqued; the Writers/Directors Series of Staged Projects where directorial skills were developed through the staging of plays; the Artistic Technical Assistance Collective (ATAC) which provided training in technical and stage craft skills; the Larry Neal Memorial Playwriting Seminar Series which were led by established playwrights who discussed both the creative and commercial aspects of playwriting; and the Open House Series which consisted of orientations and open houses for the general public.
In 1998, after 22 years, FSWW lost its performing space at West 125th Street in Harlem and is presently seeking another permanent location. As of January 2000, the FSWW, re-named The Frank Silvera Writers' Workshop Foundation, Inc., continues to offer its Larry Neal Memorial Playwriting Seminar Series, re-named the Larry Neal Memorial Writers' Series and its Reading/Critique Series. The Reading/Critique Series is held at 473 West 150th St. in the new space of the Harlem Theatre Company. FSWW's administrative office is currently located at St. Nicholas and West 147th Street.
