Description
1 videocassette (83 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Celebrates the pipe organ in America. Gives a brief history of the instrument. Shows how organs are made, how they work, and their uses in the United States, past and present. Features every kind of organ--old and new, church and theatre, mechanical action and electric action. Presents interviews with composer/organist William Albright (who performs his "Tarantella demente" at a Halloween concert), theatre organist Gaylord Carter, and organ-builder Walter Holtkamp (who describes how organs are built). Shows the installation and dedication of the Holtkamp organ at the United Methodist Church in Jamestown, N.C., and organ students at a pipe organ encounter. Organists Chris Elliott and Jim Riggs demonstrate the Wurlitzer organ at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA, and the organists and choirs of St. Thomas Church and Abyssinian Baptist Church (both in New York City) demonstrate the organ in two very different styles of music. Concludes with various organists playing selections from the repertoire: Final, from Symphonie I / Vierne (Patrick Allen at St. Thomas Church, NYC) ; Noël, grand jeu et duo / Daquin (Robert Bates at Stanford University Memorial Church) ; Paean / Howells (Gwen Adams at Stanford Memorial Church) ; Prelude and fugue in D minor / Buxtehude (James David Christie at Holy Cross Chapel, Worcester, Mass.) ; Toccata from Suite Gothique / Boellmann (Carol Williams at St. Thomas Church, NYC).
