- Summary
- Actors Barnard Hughes and Helen Stenborg open this tribute to playwright Eugene O'Neill by reading a scene from his play A touch of the poet. Ms. Stenborg describes some of the O'Neill holdings in the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, recalls a visit to the house in which the O'Neill family once lived, and delivers a monologue from Mourning becomes Electra. Mr. Hughes recounts the O'Neill plays that he and Ms. Stenborg have appeared in during their careers. Mr. Hughes and Ms. Stenborg read entries from the Provincetown Players' Minute Book pertinent to Eugene O'Neill's early career, excerpts from his correspondence to Beatrice Ashe, Lillian Gish, and Brooks Atkinson, and letters from Carlotta Monterey O'Neill to Mr. Atkinson. The program concludes with scenes from Long day's journey into night and The iceman cometh.
