- Description
- 26 pages, [106] leaves : 52 illustrations (51 colored); 57 cm
- Summary
- Contains dedication, preface and introduction (26 pages at beginning), list of plates (1 leaf) and 51 full-page hand-colored lithographs, signed: Gould & Richter, del. et lith., Hullmandel & Walton, imp.; each is accompanied by leaf of descriptive letterpress (a few printed on both sides). Four of the plates are copies or free copies of the lithographs in the original edition: Ramphastos culminatus, originally drawn and lithographed by Edward Lear; Ramphastos dicolorus, Aulacoramphus Derbianus (Pteroglossus Derbianus in first edition) and Aulacoramphus haematopygius (Pteroglossus haematopygius in first edition), originally drawn and lithographed by John Gould and Elizabeth Gould. Of the others, 28 are new renderings (a few loosely based on the first edition plates) of the remaining species represented in the first edition, except for one here omitted; 19 represent newly identified species (in one case, newly distinguished). Each is accompanied by leaf of descriptive letterpress, some printed on both sides.

- Note
- Edition statement from preface, pages [7]-[8]. "I now publish a second edition with new drawings of the old species, and figures and descriptions of no less than eighteen others--all, in fact, that are known up to the present time"--Page [8].
- Original edition issued in 3 parts, 1833-1835, with a title page dated 1834. See Sauer, no. 3, pages 25-26; Ayer Ornithological Library, pages 259-260.
- In all, 20 species are partly or wholly new to this edition, and 1 species ("Ramphastos citreopygus") from the first edition is here omitted because of an error in identification (the specimen Gould saw was made up of two included species, Ramphastos vitellinus and R. erythrorhynchus). Of the new species, Ramphastos ambiguus and R. Tocard replace "Ramphastos Swainsoni" in the first edition; Pteroglossus Azarae, included in the 1st edition, is here represented as both Pteroglossus Azarae and the newly distinguished Pteroglossus flavirostris. Many others have been renamed and/or placed in the newly identified genera Andigena, Aulacoramphus and Selenidera.
- At end, on 2 unnumbered leaves printed on both sides, is "Observations on the anatomy of the toucan," by R. Owen, accompanied by a full-page uncolored lithograph, signed G. Scharf del. et lithog.; reprinted from original edition.
- Twenty of the plates, representing the newly identified species and Pteroglossus Azarae, here newly distinguished as two, were reprinted in 1855, with their accompanying letterpress, as Supplement to the first edition of A monograph of the Ramphastidae, or family of toucans.
