- A satire against Elie-Catherine Fréron.
- In fact, an original work by Voltaire. Cf. Quérard, J.M. Supercheries littéraires (2. éd.), II, col. 318-319.
- "Mr. Hume" is identified in the preface as the author of two tragedies and the brother of the philosopher Hume; in pref. to 1763 edition (Bengesco, no. 231; BN, no. 804) he is called the "parent & ami" of the philosopher. The intended attribution was to John Home, author of Douglas; sometimes attributed to John Home, brother of David Hume. Cf. also Duckworth's introd. to L'Écossaise (in Voltaire. Works, 1968-. v. 50), p. 243-245.
