Summary
Documentary on the achievements of Carole Y. Johnson, an African-American dancer who founded the National Aboriginal/Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) in Sydney, Australia. The program begins with a historical overview of the struggles of the indigenous Australians (Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders) to win human rights and self-determination from the white government. NAISDA, described as "the first institution in Australia to facilitate dance education and training opportunities for urban Blacks," helped Aboriginals and Islanders rediscover their cultural heritage and find their own artistic voices. Johnson is seen in archival footage, teaching some of her early dance classes; the results of her efforts are demonstrated in more recent performance excerpts by the Aboriginal/Islander Dance Theatre (AIDT) and Bangarra Dance Theatre. Among the dancers and choreographers interviewed for the program are Maroochy Barambah, Cheryl Stone, Wayne Nicol, and Aku Kadogo.
