Note
  • Sometimes attributed to Voltaire, but now generally believed to be by Charles Bordes in imitation of Voltaire's L'ingénu. See BN, no. 2871; Bengesco, G. Voltaire, IV, no. 2409. A.A. Barbier (Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes, 2. éd., 1822-1827, t. 1, entry 2130) ascribed the work to Bordes, but in the 3. éd. (1872-1879, t. 1, columns 535-536), his son revised the attribution in favor of Voltaire.
  • "This anti-religious writing was generally attributed to Voltaire, and was more than once included in his works, even by himself; but it seems clear that he was not its author, and that Bordes was, though it was probably edited by Voltaire"--Note by T.D.N. Besterman to a letter by Voltaire (Besterman D14786, published online in Electronic Enlightenment). For further discussion, see article by George B. Watts in Kentucky foreign language quarterly, v. 4 (1957), pages 212-216; Lee, J. Patrick. "Voltaire éditeur de Charles Bordes: Le cathécumène," in Revue Voltaire, no. 4 (2004), pages 161-176.
  • Originally published with caption title "Le cathécumène," without publisher information and date, probably by Marc-Michel Rey, Amsterdam, 1767. See BN, entry 2871/BnF FRBNF35943153 (giving date as 1768).
See Bengesco, G. Voltaire, t. 4, pages 361-364; Lee (cited above), pages 174-175.
  • A line-by-line reprint, with minor textual variations, of the 1768 Gabriel Grasset edition with title and place of publication as above (BN, entry 2873/BnF FRBNF361218505104, with name of publisher given as "Cramer"). In the earlier edition, the last page was wrongly numbered "41," and a woodcut ornament known to have been used by Grasset appeared on the title page. Fingerprint and typographical ornaments are the same in the two editions.
  • BN/BnF gives publication information as "Genève : Cramer ou Pellet."
  • Signatures: A⁸ B⁸(-B8). A4 signed "Ajv."
  • Type flower headpiece; factotum.
