- Summary
- Profile of dance movement therapist Norma Canner. Canner herself describes many aspects of her life and work, starting with her early career as an actor, her introduction to creative dance in the classes of Barbara Mettler, and her own beginnings as a creative dance teacher, which soon led to her groundbreaking achievements as a teacher of physically and mentally handicapped children and adults. Also discussed are her book --and a time to dance, co-authored with Harriet Klebanoff ; her participation in an innovative program in expressive therapy at Lesley College Arts Institute ; and her current activities in private practice. The evolution of her approach is illustrated through still photos and moving images from the past and present. Commentators from the worlds of education, psychology, dance therapy, and the arts share their perceptions and assessments of her contributions to the field. The profile (c1998 ; ca. 71 min.), is followed by supplemental material (c1999 ; ca. 50 min.), including documentation of a four-day workshop titled In search of our beginnings ; interviews on Canner's experiences in the theater ; an example of an individual session ; footage of a reunion between Canner and her former students at Lesley College.
