- Biography
The Helen Armstead-Johnson photograph collection was assembled by English professor Helen Armstead-Johnson, beginning in the 1960s, during the course of her research into the contributions of African-Americans to the American stage. The collection consists of over 15,000 photographs, prints, postcards and transparencies that document African-American entertainers in various areas of the performing arts.
In 1974 Johnson established the Armstead-Johnson Foundation for Theater Research for the purpose of further collecting, preserving, documenting and interpreting the contributions of African-Americans to the field of entertainment, in the United States as well as abroad. Beginning in 1975, the Foundation mounted a series of major exhibitions including "Dixie to Broadway" (1977) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and "Black America on Stage" (1979) at the New York State Museum, in Albany. In November 1980 the Foundation initiated its Spotlight Awards to honor those African-Americans who had made significant contributions to the performing arts. The first two recipients were 92-year-old entertainer and dance innovator Ulysses S. "Kid" Thompson and the Negro Ensemble Company. The collection, consisting of several thousand objects including photographs, posters, letters, scrapbooks, costumes and costume designs, and recordings, was once considered to be one of the largest private collections of black show business memorabilia. In December 1996 Helen Armstead-Johnson donated the collection to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
